MANILA, Philippines — Denmark’s Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) is spending P30.5 billion for its proposed development of a 300-megawatt (MW) onshore wind farm in Nueva Ecija.
CIP subsidiary San Jose Onshore Wind Power Corp. (SJOWPC) told the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) that the project is targeted to start construction as early as April 2027, with completion slated for the second quarter of 2029.
Spanning 4,617 hectares, the San Jose Wind Power Project will be developed across San Jose City and the municipalities of Lupao and Carranglan in Nueva Ecija.
“The energy sector continues to face systemic challenges, including heavy dependence on imported fossil fuels, grid instability and vulnerability to fluctuations in global fuel prices. These issues contribute to energy security risks and economic vulnerability,” SJOWPC said.
Latest data from the Department of Energy showed that coal accounted for the largest share of the country’s power mix at 63 percent, with renewables only making up around 22 percent.
According to SJOWPC, wind energy offers a viable, zero-emission generation, helping the Philippines reduce its import reliance while reinforcing the national grid.
The country’s peak electricity demand is projected to surge more than four-fold to 68.5 gigawatts by 2050 from 16.6 GW in 2022, according to the Philippine Energy Plan.
The Luzon grid, where the San Jose project is set to rise, is expected to account for 70 percent of this projected demand.
“The project will not only add clean energy to the Luzon grid but also support the Philippine government’s broader objectives of enhancing energy security, diversifying the energy mix and advancing the transition toward a low-carbon economy,” SJOWPC said.
To start project construction, SJOWPC intends to apply for an environmental compliance certificate (ECC) for the proposed wind facility.
Under existing guidelines, renewable energy projects with a total generating capacity of at least 100 MW are required to conduct an environmental impact assessment and submit a report to the DENR when applying for an ECC.
Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, CIP is a global company that invests in clean energy projects such as wind, solar and bioenergy.
