The Philippines has launched its first National Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Policy and Nature-based Solutions Catalogue, establishing a national framework that uses ecosystems such as forests, mangroves and coastal habitats to address climate change, protect biodiversity and strengthen disaster resilience.
The initiative was launched by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the Accelerating Green and Climate Finance for Nature-based Solutions (AGCF) Project, with support from the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines and the NbS Support Network.
UNDP described the policy as “a huge leap forward” towards efforts to mitigate climate change.”
The agency said the catalogue serves as “a playbook of 21 powerful examples of nature-based solutions—from restoring forests to rehabilitating coastlines—making it easier to fund and implement them.”
According to UNDP, the policy is intended to encourage smarter investments in ecosystem-based projects while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities through environmental protection.
The organization also said nature-based solutions can help communities better withstand the impacts of typhoons, flooding and other climate-related hazards by strengthening adaptation and resilience.
“This is more than just policy; it’s about building a greener, more resilient, and prosperous future for every Filipino,” UNDP said.
The policy is expected to guide government agencies, local governments and development partners in integrating nature-based approaches into climate action and sustainable development programs nationwide.
