TAIWANESE semiconductor firm ASE Co. Ltd will expand its local operations and open a training facility at its manufacturing site, the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) announced on Wednesday.

ASE — or Advanced Semiconductor Engineering — is the world’s largest independent provider of outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) services. It provides comprehensive semiconductor packaging, testing, materials, and electronic manufacturing services (EMS) for automotive, Internet of Things (IoT), and consumer electronics.

Its expansion plans include hiring more workers, deploying advanced manufacturing technologies, and strengthening linkages within the local semiconductor supply chain.

During the visit of PEZA Director General Tereso Panga to ASA’s plant at Gateway Business Park-Special Economic Zone (GBP-SEZ) in General Trias, Cavite on Jan. 22, company executives showed its advanced Autoline-enabled manufacturing platforms with robotic welding/conveyor technology which can receive, process, and produce customized or high-volume parts within 24 hours.

This equipment is supported by in-house reliability testing and failure analysis capabilities.

The company, headed by vice president and managing director Tony Arellano, also discussed its initiatives to enhance human resource development through the establishment of the ASE Institute. This will deliver intensive ground-floor (entry-level) training for engineering to support the industry’s growing demand for upskilled and future-ready talent.

Complementing the efforts are ASA’s sustainability initiatives such as water conservation measures, green energy implementation, and materials and supplies localization.

Panga invited ASE to participate in PEZA AI Academy for integration of its internal training programs into the Academy’s curriculum.

“We want to pursue an industry-wide approach to human resource development for our PEZA-registered business enterprises. Strong linkages with universities and colleges are crucial in strengthening the supply chain and sustaining high-technology industries,” Panga said.

The local ASE was originally known as Cypress Semiconductor Philippines, which opened in 1994.

In 2020, its Cavite plant was acquired by Infineon Technologies as part of a global $9.4 billion deal. In early 2024, Infineon sold the manufacturing site to the ASE Group, which now operates the facility as ASE Philippines.

It currently employs 825 workers.
